My brother Mike visited and we spent a couple of days in New York. I love that city.

DC Greek Festival
Today's photos come from the spring festival held at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The festival was great. There was a ton of delicious food, the same Greek song being played hour after hour, dancing, and crafts. It was really an enjoyable festival, and I would recommend you check it out if you're in DC.

The Garden
Bloombars holds an open mic night each Monday called the Garden. It's mostly poetry and spoken word, with a song here and there. On Monday I went with my mentee to see the featured performer, a recent Howard grad. I hoped my mentee would get up and perform a poem, but he wasn't feeling up to it. Maybe next time. Here are a few pictures from the performances.

Eckington Artworks first exhibit
I spoke with the owner of the Windows Cafe and Market, just down the street from my house, and I am planning to have a photo exhibit there this spring or summer. I have had a few pictures hanging there, but never did much more than put them on the wall, and after a few days two of the three had fallen and broken the frame or glass. I didn't push it because there was another group, Ten Miles Square, that has photos posted there. After reaching out a few times to the woman who put that exhibit together and not getting a response I decide to approach Mr. Abeje myself. He is supportive of the idea, so I am putting together a plan, and he will host a wine/cheese night at the cafe, we'll have an opening reception with information and about 12 pictures from my trip to Nicaragua last year. I think we'll have the photos there for a month and see what happens. Wish me luck, and if you live in or around DC I expect to see you at he opening! Here are a couple of preview pictures that will be featured in the exhibit.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
I went to a DC United game with a student I mentor. Here are some of the highlights.
The first set of photos of of the Fan-atic, Darth Hooligan. He plays a huge bass drum, he screams, he yells, he chants, he poses for pictures without being asked...how can you not love Darth Hooligan? Not to mention the fact that his number is 69. Get it, 69...ha ha!

Now on to the actual game. The DC United defeated the Kansas City Wizards 2-0. Some action shots below.

Chugga chugga chugga chugga...
When I visited home during spring break I went to a train show with my dad. It was a huge show with tons of exhibits from all over the country. Here are a couple of 'hot pics' I got to take before my battery died.
I also took two pictures with my phone of some incredibly inappropriate and racist signs that were there. I need to dl them from my phone, but if anyone is interested in seeing them I will post them too. Unbelievable that this stuff exists, especially in 2010.

Urban Art
Cool signs in the alley behind the 930 club.
This wall of minor graffiti and tons of chewed gum is on V Street just down from the 930 club. ABC gum anyone?
These posters are placed on the wall of what I think is an auto repair shop right where the parking lot for the 930 club is located. The circle image was also present at the immigrants right march last month.
Again, behind the 930 club this this picture shows graffiti at the top of the building. I took the picture from behind a fence lined with barbwire.
This is a set of stenciled faces in an alleyway behind the 930 club. Groups like Albus Cavus use this technique regularly.

Immigration March
I realized I forgot to include pictures of the massive immigration rights march on Washington on March 21. It was quite an experience. Another march is planned for May 1. Maybe I'll see you there.
